I’ve had the good fortune to review a new eco-friendly mobile phone by Sony Ericsson. The Sony Ericsson Elm looks like just any other full-featured mobile phone, but has a whole raft of eco-friendly features. Features include use of recycled plastics, electronic manual on the phone, no hazardous chemicals, minimised packaging and water-based paints.
In terms of appearance, the Elm is a compact and attractive phone with a black plastic front, and a metallic rear. The large screen is bright and easy to read. I’d suggest you want a screen protector for the screen, as I get the impression that it might scratch easily. The buttons on the phone are perfect for us chaps with large fingers. The buttons do make a subtle click when pressed (tactile feedback is what I miss with the iPhone). Therefore I was typing out a text message really quickly.

Vice President Joe Biden is set to announce a series of initiatives today aimed at helping middle-income Americans make their homes more energy efficient and boost job growth among home retrofitters.
The goals of the measures are to help Americans keep down energy costs while at the same time laying the groundwork for a larger home energy efficiency industry.
“Together, these programs will grow the home retrofit industry and help middle-class families save money and energy,” Biden is to say at the event.
President Barack Obama, under pressure to reduce the stubbornly high 9.6 percent jobless rate, hopes the energy efficiency business and green technologies will be a future source of strong job growth. |

Europe’s largest onshore wind farm, which is located in East Renfrewshire in Scotland, is expanding. They are increasing the number of turbines on site to 215 from 140- raising electricity generating capacity by two thirds.
The 140 turbines currently at the wind farm, to the south of Glasgow, can produce enough electricity to power 180,000 homes.
The expansion will see its generating capacity increase from 322MW to 539MW - enough to power about 300,000 homes.

Google is planning to invest in a transmission network project that will be able to harvest electricity from wind farms off the Mid-Atlantic coast and power 1.9 million homes across Virginia, New York and New Jersey.
 Google will buy a 37.5% stake in the development stage of the Atlantic Wind Connection project, said Rick Needham, director of green business operations Google. The project will cost about $5 billion and Google’s initial investment will likely be about $200 million, the New York Times reported, citing project leader Trans-Elect Development Co.

Created by London designer Patrick Hyland, the Nokia E-Cu concept handset has a thermogenerator built in so that it can convert heat into energy. The copper outer layer, which is designed to look like dry, cracked earth, has engraved heatsinks which draw body heat energy to convert into charge.

Newsweek’s Green Rankings looks at the five hundred largest publically traded U.S. based companies. Each company is given a total Green Score, and the Green Score is comprised of three sub scores. What are those sub scores? An Environmental Impact Score (EIS), a Green Policies Score (GPS) and a Reputation Survey Score (RSS). The Environmental Impact Score includes over seven hundred and fifty metrics and accounts for forty-five percent of the total score. The Green Policies Score also accounts for forty-five percent of the total, with ten percent going to the reputation survey (which is a survey of environmental officers, CEOs and academics).
Dell, the Austin computer company ranked as the greenest company of 2010 in the survey. Not only was Dell number one, but they did it with a perfect 100.00 Green Score. |
