photo: Archana Pandey/Creative Commons It well may be the world's most famous office building, at least it's owners think so, but the Empire State Building is now also New York City's largest commercial purchaser of renewable energy. Under a newly-signed contract with Green Mountain Energy, 100% of the building's electricity, all 55 million kilowatt-hours of it, will come f... Photo: NASA, public domain. Agriculture 2.0: Doing More With Less Imagine a farmer sitting at the kitchen table or at the wheel of a GPS-controlled tractor, looking at the screen of a iPad or smartphone that shows his fields seen from above with various data-points overlaid on top. "Hmm, the North-West corner needs a bit more water today." and 'tap-tap' on the screen and the drip-irrigation system releases a bit more water there, taking into account the relative air humidity and the next few days' weather forecast. Image: Positive Psychology News Isaac Asimov is one of the greatest science fiction writers in history -- his Foundation novels and Robot universe (which recently inspired the I, Robot Will Smith film) continue to inform popular culture to this day. Asimov was also a professor of biochemistry at Boston University and a prolific author of successful pop science books as well. In other words, the man was no slouch. No surprise then, that he speaks more eloquently about climate change in 1977 than most folks d... Read the full story on TreeHugger read full article ...

Photo credit: Kun_Tiqi We've covered a whole quiver of wooden surfboards in the past (links below), but the Kun_Tiqi boards somehow slipped under our radar, until showing up on the screen as one of the finalists for the international sports expo (ISPO) Brand New Award. Contrary to most foam-based surfboards the Kun_Tiqi are crafted from 90% renewable and natural materials, primarly balsa wood, sourced from a family farm in Ecuador. Avoiding the nasty epoxy resins normally used to protect foam boards, Kun_Tiqi opts instead for a resin mixture of 98% linseed oil.... Read the full story on TreeHugger read full article ...
