As Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee hoped in his Budget speech, his announcements for exemptions for environment-friendly bio-diesel earned him smiles from environmentalists. Mukherjee announced the government’s decision to fully exempt petro-diesel blended with bio-diesel from excise duty. The Finance Minister said in order to encourage the use of this environment friendly fuel, the government proposed to reduce basic custom duty on green fuel, also known as bio-diesel fuel, from 7.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent at par with petrol-diesel. “With these proposals, I hope to see a smile on faces of the green brigade,” he said....

We have inspected several mills and the process will continue” The ten-member Vidhan Sabha committee on Pollution-causing Sugar Mills and Distilleries inspected AB Grain Spirits Private Limited, owned by the Chadha Group, at kidi Afghana ion Gurdaspur district last week. Residents of villages nearby have been up in the arms against the mill, complaining that the mill was dumping toxic waste into Beas riover and also causing air pollution....
