Reinforcing what previous studies have show, new research in the journal Conservation Letters reveals that as people start leaving the Amazon forest for urban centers, rather than as supposed, exploitation of the forest continues unchecked as commercial activities continue, supplying the cities. ... photo: Jeremy Levine via flickr. Out for nearly a week now, perhaps the most striking thing about the Silicon Valley Toxics Coaltion's solar power manufacturer scorecard is that only 14 companies bothered responding--something which GreenBiz reminds us is just about one quarter of the industry's module production. Among those not responding were seve... Read the full story on TreeHugger read full article ...

Images via iFixIt Ever since seeing iFixIt Global Repair Community at Maker Faire last year, we've been infatuated. The team breaks down the latest electronics so we can get familiar with their insides, gain some familiarity with electronic components, and hopefully build up the confidence required to take a screwdriver to a broken device and fix it ourselves. The late... Read the full story on TreeHugger read full article ...

Image: Google.co.uk Making an Age-Old Dream a Reality Protected endangered species just got a lot easier thanks to the geniuses at Google. They just released a new app for Android-based smartphones (like the Nexus One, Motorola Droid, HTC G1 Phone, etc) that finally brings the rapidly-improving field of animal cognitive linguistics to the general public. The app uses Google's massive computing power to do statistical inferences on the recorded 'speech' of animals and then translates it into human-understandable language. Check out the demonstration video below... Read the full story on TreeHugger read full article ...

Image via Ecofriend It's tough work to find a small scale wind energy charger that works. While we've seen innovative designs pop up over the last few years, it's simply difficult to get enough wind coming through such a little device to charge devices. However, thanks to a company called Humdinger Wind Energy LLC, that might change with their new device called the microBelt. It is a piezoelectric turbine-based system that is purportedly 10 times... Image via PhysOrg, Credit: Y. Lin, USF When it comes to electronics, we think that efficiency comes with perfect uniformity. But it turns out, defects are often more desirable. Remember how, thanks to studying spider hairs, that variations in a surface is the key to repelling water? Well little variations in a surface is also key to making graphene ... Screenshot via Tekserve Tekserve has been making big dents in the amount of electronics collected for recycling in New York City. The company partners up with the Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC) and offers free-of-charge recycling drives for the general public. Since starting it up in 2007, the collections have grown exponentially, showing the interest residents have in ensuring their gadgets are properly recycled. They offer a great alternativ... Image via Mike McCaffrey Earlier this week we talked about a Greenpeace report showing how IT is responsible for a vast amount of carbon emissions, and yet is also a tool capable of greatly reducing the carbon footprint of companies. Case in point is a new article from Greenbiz talking about how IT helped Citi become one of America's greenest banks. By implementing a few simple changes to IT hardware, the bank earned top rank from ...

Photo: Michael Graham Richard What Do You Expect to Pay for an Electric Car? With its unveiling of the LEAF pricing, Nissan just did us all a favor by creating a new "anchor" price for electric cars. People tend to have an "anchor" price for most products, and judge them in relation to that anchor. For example, if you expect a laptop computer to be about $1,000, the $750 model might look like a bargain, but if you were anchored on $500, it'll seem expensive...
