Well it was just a matter of time before some commie scientists named an extinct animal after the 44th president of the United States. Obamadon gracilis is the name, and the foot-long creature — which was discovered in a
fossil bed in Montana — has been extinct for about 65 million years. And
ironically, its extinction may indicate that paleolithic changes in
climate affected animals differently than previously believed.
Paleontologist Nicholas Longrich explains that scientists are now
rethinking the idea that the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs
spared smaller lizards like Obamadon:....
India’s Biological Diversity (BD) Act was enacted in 2002. There is now a decade of its existence to reflect on.The genesis of the law can be traced to the Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD), which was signed at the Rio Summit in 1992. While assessing the 10 years of the Act, one has to be mindful of how India itself has undergone change in these years. By the time the Act came into force, trade imperatives had begun to influence environmental law and policy making both at the national and global level. The final shape of the Act and the manner of its implementation through the BD rules issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests....

“We are looking to make wildlife and livestock more compatible by dealing with diseases, by dealing with human/wildlife conflict, and at the same time seeking economic opportunity in both of these arenas.” Steve Osofsky, director of wildlife health policy for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), developed the Animal & Human Health for the Environment And Development (AHEAD) program at WCS and served as the first wildlife veterinary officer for the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks. In an interview with Worldwatch Research Fellow Molly Theobald, Dr. Osofsky discusses how farmers can both help and benefit from wildlife c....

I’ve had the good fortune to review a new eco-friendly mobile phone by Sony Ericsson. The Sony Ericsson Elm looks like just any other full-featured mobile phone, but has a whole raft of eco-friendly features. Features include use of recycled plastics, electronic manual on the phone, no hazardous chemicals, minimised packaging and water-based paints.
In terms of appearance, the Elm is a compact and attractive phone with a black plastic front, and a metallic rear. The large screen is bright and easy to read. I’d suggest you want a screen protector for the screen, as I get the impression that it might scratch easily. The buttons on the phone are perfect for us chaps with large fingers. The buttons do make a subtle click when pressed (tactile feedback is what I miss with the iPhone). Therefore I was typing out a text message really quickly.

Vice President Joe Biden is set to announce a series of initiatives today aimed at helping middle-income Americans make their homes more energy efficient and boost job growth among home retrofitters.
The goals of the measures are to help Americans keep down energy costs while at the same time laying the groundwork for a larger home energy efficiency industry.
“Together, these programs will grow the home retrofit industry and help middle-class families save money and energy,” Biden is to say at the event.
President Barack Obama, under pressure to reduce the stubbornly high 9.6 percent jobless rate, hopes the energy efficiency business and green technologies will be a future source of strong job growth.... Read more...

Europe’s largest onshore wind farm, which is located in East Renfrewshire in Scotland, is expanding. They are increasing the number of turbines on site to 215 from 140- raising electricity generating capacity by two thirds.
The 140 turbines currently at the wind farm, to the south of Glasgow, can produce enough electricity to power 180,000 homes.
The expansion will see its generating capacity increase from 322MW to 539MW - enough to power about 300,000 homes.

Google is planning to invest in a transmission network project that will be able to harvest electricity from wind farms off the Mid-Atlantic coast and power 1.9 million homes across Virginia, New York and New Jersey.

Newsweek’s Green Rankings looks at the five hundred largest publically traded U.S. based companies. Each company is given a total Green Score, and the Green Score is comprised of three sub scores. What are those sub scores? An Environmental Impact Score (EIS), a Green Policies Score (GPS) and a Reputation Survey Score (RSS). The Environmental Impact Score includes over seven hundred and fifty metrics and accounts for forty-five percent of the total score. The Green Policies Score also accounts for forty-five percent of the total, with ten percent going to the reputation survey (which is a survey of environmental officers, CEOs and academics).

Volkswagen has debuted its Up! Lite concept car at the 2009 LA Auto Show. It looks very cool, metallic and looks to sport quite abit of tech on the inside too. With four seats, the Up! Lite offers enough room for young couples and their dog (or two children), but its strange these days why automakers can’t put in another seat to make it a five seater. Underneath the hood, you will find VW’s TDI engine, an electric motor and a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox which work well to result in a small aerodynamic footprint. This works out an impressive 65 g/km of CO2 emissions and a fuel efficiency of up to 70 MPG of diesel. This is an impressive figure but in my personal view not as impressive as it appears. I believe VW already has a similar vehicle – the Polo Blue Motion which can already do up to 62 MPG. Though the Up! Lite will of course sport more tech, reduce CO2 emissions and look much better designed.

The Eco-cartridge is a concept for an ink cartridge that is made from recycled cardboard. The cartridge would save on packaging and would use a considerable amount less plastic to help the product decompose quickly. The Eco-cartridge concept has been designed by Kevin Cheng to replace current Epson 79 printer cartridges. Each Eco-cartridge is made from one piece of recycled cardboard, the inside of the cartridge is lined with a biodegradable laminate to allow it to hold the ink without any leakage. The cardboard would need a little glue to form the cartridge, and the only additions to this would be the plastic port to connect to the printer and the cartridge chip.

Soladey is a toothbrush that uses negative ions to kill any mouth bacteria, allowing you to clean your teeth without requiring any toothpaste. The negative ions are generated through the reaction of titanium with light and water, in some models of the soladey toothbrush a solar panel is additionally used to generate them. Soladey Ionic Toothbrush has been developed by Dr. Kunio Komiyama at the University of Saskatchewan and has been manufactured by Japan’s Shiken. The brush contains a titanium dioxide rod which runs from the bristle head (which can be easily replaced) down into the handle.
